A Study On The English Translation Of Image In Li Yu's Ci-poems

Ci-poetry is an important poetic form of classical Chinese poetry.As is said that"Poems speak for one's ambition while Ci-poems one's feeling",Ci-poets write down their truest feeling in the Ci-poems.Li Yu is a Ci-poet with a purest heart,and his life experience of changing from being an emperor in his early days to being a prisoner in his late years makes his Ci-poems more sorrowful and deeply moving.The Images in his Ci-poems are especially characteristic,and the most representative ones are the Images of Spring,Images of the Moon and Images of Man.How to recreate the profound meaning and affection by rebuilding the images in translation is the key to Image translation.There are three chapters in the dissertation.The first chapter studies the translation of the Images of Spring,analyzing the translation of the Spring Flower Image which symbolizes the fragility of beauty,the Spring Grass Image which symbolizes the grief of departing and pain of missing someone,and the Spring Water Image which symbolizes the everlasting regret of human life.In the translation of the Images of Spring,the translator should reproduce the metaphor of color words,the rhetorical effect of reduplicated words,and the sentence which contains meaning in its structure.The second chapter studies the translation of the Images of the Moon,making an analysis according to the different symbolic meanings of the Moon Image,including the moon of sorrow and lovesickness,the moon of mourning for the lost country and the past,and the moon of fairness and eternity.The symbolic meaning of the moon can be reproduced in translation by prominence in context and reorganizing its combination with other images.The last chapter studies the translation of the Images of Man,analyzing the "Man" Image which symbolizes the sorrow of dispersing and aging,and the Female Image which symbolizes a sense of life in the expression of dramatics.In translation,the singular or plural form,the perspective,the contrast as well as the dramatic scene,movement and voices can all influence the translation of the Images of Man.Based on the studies and analysis,the author concludes some principles and strategies that can be applied in the Image translation of Li Yu's Ci-poems,hoping the findings could further promote the progressing of the translation of Li Yu's Ci-poems.
