A Report On Liaison Interpreting Practice Of "2015 Chengdu International Sister Cities Youth Music Festival"

“Chengdu International Sister Cities Youth Music Festival” is an event held by Chengdu Municipal Government for the purpose of culture and art exchanges,which also helps to elevate Chengdu's influence on the world.This is a report based on the author's liaison interpreting practice during this Music Festival.The task was to serve Jackson Wells Band from Tennessee state,USA.During the festival,the author accompanied the members of Jackson Wells Band all the way in the process of their rehearsing,performing,traveling around,and experiencing Chengdu's culture.Being different from conference interpreting,most interpreting activities in this music festival belonged to liaison interpreting.It featured with various scenes mainly in daily communications.Moreover,this practice was also a foreign reception practice,which required the interpreter to express and interpret in a much more accurate and proper way.Similarly,Skopos Theory holds the view that translation is an intentional human activity,and a purposeful communication in which both requirements of readers and clients are supposed to be taken into consideration.As a result,it is the purpose of interpreting that determines the interpreting approaches.In this regard,the interpreter plays a crucial role in selecting interpreting techniques,which is highly in tune with the characteristics of this liaison practice.After introducing the interpreting process and combining it with relevant theories,this report analyzed the specific application of some liaison interpreting techniques,namely,amplification,omission,conversion,inversion,division,repetition,negation and rephrasing under the guidance of Skopos Theory.Moreover,the conclusion about major findings and limitations is also drawn in the last chapter.Knowledge gained from textbooks was tested and external awareness of cross-cultural communication concerning etiquettes,cultural differences were learned in the practice.Though the analysis and summary might not be profound enough,this report aims to help improve the author's interpreting capability in the future.
