In the Eastern Jin dynasty, the external situation in the north-south confrontation,as well as the internal geopolitical pattern of the upstream and downstream struggle, are two key factors which created a unique role and status of JiangZhou. However,JiangZhou’s strategic position will bound to change accordingly accompanied with the two key factors constantly changing circumstances during the Eastern Jin dynasty. This paper intended to explore changes in JiangZhou’s strategic position,so as to examine the historical appearance of the political changes in the Eastern Jin and Southern Dynasties. This paper takes the example of a combination of case studies and analysis, investigate the changes of JiangZhou’s strategic position and its embodiment in every case and history process. This article involves varying degrees of political, military, economic, family, ideological, ethnic and other aspects of the content, comprehensive study in JiangZhou strategic position in the political environment and its impact. The first chapter takes the conflict between Sima Rui and Hua Yi(JiangZhou provincial governor)as the starting point to study the strategic position of JiangZhou in the founding of the Eastern Jin dynasty, and analyzes the origins of JiangZhou’s strategic location in the JingZhou-YangZhou conflict. In the conflict between Sima Rui and Hua Yi,for Sima Rui,JiangZhou is a base and a key area to consolidate JianKang, break through the encirclement, expand the forces in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River, this shows that the downstream JianKang regime calculate to control in JiangZhou firmly when based on the initial stage of YangZhou.Facing with the rebellion of Hua Yi,the JiangNan gentry had political changes, while Sima Rui took the opportunity to integrate the support of the North and South nobles. To Hua Yi as the representative,The HuaShi family’s management of JiangZhou and its transformation become the embryonic form of hereditary powerful family in Eastern Jin dynasty. The second chapter takes the history of the three provincial governors in JiangZhou as the background, discusses the fierce struggle of JiangZhou provincial governors YingZhan,Wen Qiao,Liu Yin and JingZhou provincial governor Tao Kan,Full of swords and conspiracy,in order to complement its interpretation of JiangZhou politics during the period from the Eastern Jin dynasty to YuShi-WangShi contest.Whether it is split JingZhou and JiangZhou, adjusted the officials,or the letter YingZhan wrote to Tao Kan with tenderness under the hidden murder,or the truth of"XieHangQianQuan、QiHaoDuanJin"(颉颃缝蜷、齐好断金),or the political words"Liu Yin lack of governor ability",all reflected the administration of the three provincial governors.Tao Kan fought with the imperial court around the JiangZhou, even occupied by force in JiangZhou during the rebellion of GuoMo,eventually formed the bullying situation of downstream court. The politics of this period shows that JiangZhou in JingZhou-YangZhou controversy has buffering status of checks and balances in the early days of the Eastern Jin dynasty. This is aftermath of the rebellion of Wang Dun,constitute the prelude and the direct origin of YuShi-WangShi conflict. The third chapter to prophecy "emperor appeared in JiangZhou" as a clue, discusses the dispute between JiangZhou and YangZhou in the background of ethnarch politics. The origin and development of the prophecy"emperor appeared in JiangZhou" and royal contradiction embodied,JiangZhou provincial governor LiuJun won the throne.Liu Zixun occupied in JiangZhou and compete with Ming Emperor to ascend the throne himself as emperor.Behind this series of major processes,JiangZhou’s strategic position in the geopolitical pattern of the feudal town has been rising. The state of feudal town in the upper reaches and the lower court confrontation still exists, while JiangZhou gradually replaced some of the status and role of JingZhou. The state challenged the lower court by the replacement of JingZhou into the JiangZhou, the conflict between JingZhou and YangZhou transformed the conflict between JiangZhou and YangZhou. The changes of geopolitical pattern of the feudal town, royal contradiction, ethnarch politics, together constitute the truth of"emperor appeared in Jiangzhou".The fourth chapter examines the rise and fall of JiangZhou’s strategic status in the rise of JiangZhou emirates and the process of Liang dynasty ’s destruction and Chen dynasty’s establishment. After the development of Qi and Liang dynasty,JiangZhou Emirates spring up in the rebellion of Hou Jing.Face the rise of Chen Baxian, due to different positions and at different levels,JiangZhou emirates split into two emirates, north and south:the North branch of the emirates entered the court, while the south branch occupy the country. There exists fundamental contradictions in the source of power and vested interests between the south branch of the Emirates and central government, the south branch of the emirates are fiercely rebelling against Chen dynasty, formed a regional rivalries between the southern JiangZhou and the northern court.Simultaneously,in the rivalries between the south of the Five Ridges(such as JiaoZhou and GuangZhou)and North court,JiangZhou is a strategic location and key stronghold where the two sides fierce contend for. This paper concludes with a comprehensive analysis:we should note the ups and downs of changes and its impact of JiangZhou’s strategic position in each historical period, this change can not be simply summarized in "strategic buffer" or "strategic checks and balances".In the history of the Eastern Jin and Southern Dynasties, the conflict between JingZhou and YangZhou transformed the conflict between JiangZhou and YangZhou, and then shift to the North-South confrontation, which constitutes the trajectory of change of JiangZhou’s strategic position. The change of JiangZhou strategic position is a microcosm of the political changes in the Eastern Jin and Southern Dynasties.
