From the chaos of Yongjia and until the demise of Chen Dynasty,population migration was one of the most remarkable characteristics of the era.During this period,the main body of population migration was the rabble.But there are special groups,like Northern Political ExilesDuring the Eastern Jin and Southern Dynasties,there were six peak periods,they respectively are 347-352 years,383-386 years,410-417 years,442-444 years,505-509 years,524-529 years.There are two reasons for these peak periods.The first is political chaos in the north,a large number of northerners choose to go to the South for a stable political environment.The second is that many Northern Expeditions have achieved major results,like Nan Yan Dynasty and Hou Qin Dynasty was perished by Liu Yu’s Northern Expedition.Another example is Chen Qingzhi’ s Northern Expedition,which once captured the Northern Wei Dynasty’s capital Luoyang.There are many reasons about Northerners exiled to South.After comprehensive research,it can be roughly classified into three types:the first is political chaos in the north,and some northerners go to South for refuge;the second is that some northerners were captured in the Civil War;the third is that some northerners are from the Han nationality and with a yearning for the regime of the South,so they headed the southern regime on their own initiative.After Northern Political Exiles entered the South,they had activities in various fields.By textual research,these activities are mainly concentrated in four aspects.The first is military activity,most Northern Political Exiles were promoted to general and participate in the Northern Expedition,they were active in the Civil War.The second is the internal affairs,Northern Political Exiles have made many suggestions for some major affairs in the South and have been adopted.The third is diplomatic,the southward movement of Northern Political Exiles directly affected the relations between the North and the South.Besides,some Northern Political Exiles also spared no effort to make a good relationship between the North and the South.The fourth is academic exchange,Northern Political Exiles bring the academic ideas of the North into the South and promote the exchange and integration of academic ideas between the North and the South,this helps to break the barriers between North and South academics.Although Northern Political Exiles have been appointed in political,they are difficult to integrate into the South in social.It is often nicknamed by the southern nobility with the word "Lu" and has been repeatedly squeezed by the southern nobility in the formal occasions.After Northern Political Exiles entered the South,they had an important impact on two aspects.In terms of culture,Northern Political Exiles promoted the spread of Northern academic to the South,this plays a role in promoting cultural exchanges between the North and the South.In terms of politics,seen from a short line,the movement of Northern Political Exiles from the North to the South directly triggered the conflict between the North and the South,which increased the frequency of war.Seen from the long line,Northern Political Exiles still play a major role in easing North-South relations and helping to eliminate the antagonism between the North and the South,to promote the North-South relations from the confrontation to the relaxation and paved the way for the reunification of north and south again.
