Yan Zhenqing Script had established its special position in the calligraphy community as a classic writing style besides that of the famous “two Wangs” since late Tang Dynasty.After that a series of extraordinary “Yan style” calligraphers have emerged with a climax of imitation in Qing Dynasty,some names of whom like Liu Yong,Qian Nan Yuan,Zhang Tingji,Weng Tonghe and others you can find in a list by Sha Menghai's work “Calligraphy in the Last Three Hundred Years”.Among them,Qian Nanyuan's full pursuit of the character of Yan Zhenqing is particularly prominent.During his whole life Qian respected Yan Zhenqing for both his noble personality and achievement in calligraphy.Qian's regular script has absorbed the rounded thickness of Yan Zhenqing and also the essence of a number of prevalent calligraphy styles to create the formation of a simple and vigorous,solemn and unique style in the Qing Dynasty.Qian NanYuan had served as a good example of Inheritance and innovation and his leading status in the calligraphy community can be reflected by the fact that people started learning Yan's style with imitation of Qian's writing during the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China.Therefore,the author has carried out a detailed and accurate discussion on Qian Nanyuan's inheritance and innovation on Yan's regular script,in order to enrich the small amount of existing materials on Qian's calligraphy study.The first part,from the time to introduce Qiannan Yuan regular script style formation of the three stages.This paper is divided into three chapters.The first one takes Qian NanYuan's life as the breakthrough point and analyzes the three stages of the development of his regular script style.Chapter Two elaborates on the inheritance and innovation of Qian Nanyuan's regular script to Yan's through comparing pictures of their respective works,pointing out the main features of Qian's style on three aspects including techniques of writing,lines and strokes.The third chapter studies the influence of Qian Nanyuan's style from both his position in the late Qing Dynasty and the early Ming Dynasty and calligraphers inspired by him,and tries to explain his enlightenment on contemporary regular script writing.
