International scientific and technological cooperation and exchanges entailed translation of English texts of science and technology(EST)into other languages, since English is the working language of almost all the important research journals.Translation of scientific texts from English into Chinese helps to introduce cutting-edge scientific findings into China, thus promoting the sharing of scientific knowledge among people.Compared to other genres of writing,EST has its unique stylistic features.Translation of EST follows principles different from other genres of writing.Understanding of its stylistic features contributes to the formulation of translation principles for scientific literature. In this paper, the author analyzes the stylistic features of the scientific texts.Lexically, technical terms and acronyms are heavily used in EST papers.Grammatically, many long and difficult sentences are used in EST texts.Discursively, relative pronouns are frequently employed to achieve higher degree of formality.Based on previous studies on translation of EST,the author summarizes the principle of accuracy, conciseness, coherence and formality, which are in accordance to the stylistic features of EST.The author also tries to prove the feasibility of the four principles with examples quoted from her translations of two research articles published in Nature.Following the four translation principles helps to not only accurately transfer the original meaning, but also fully embody the lexical, grammatical and discursive features of texts of science and technology. Thus, the aim of disseminating latest scientific findings is achieved.
