As a technical application text, machinery equipment installation specification plays an important role in the scientific enterprises and industrial and mining enterprises, which provides basic information on equipment for the technicians and guidance for construction crews with equipment installation, operation and maintenance. With the continuous deepening of reform and opening up, many Chinese enterprises begin to undertake foreign engineering aid-projects and infrastructure projects to make a big difference throughout the world. In these projects, whether the translation of the mechanical equipment installation specification is successful or not has a very important impact on the users of the products or the construction crews. According to the above reason along with my own interest in the translation of English for science and technology, the author chooses the mechanical equipment installation specification as the source text of translation and research, which has practical significance.This paper is a translation report. The selected material is Boiler Pump Pipe Installation Specification of the Power Plant of Congo Aided by Electric Power Design & Research Institute. This paper mainly consists of four parts. The first part introduces the background of the translation project, theoretical guidance, the target and the significance. The second part explores and studies the language style and structure characteristics of the mechanical equipment installation specification. In the third part, the translator summarizes difficulties in translation and translation methods. This part focuses on the translation of professional terminology, the voice conversion, the command style sentences and the chart in the mechanical equipment installation specification. Under the guidance of functional theories of translation from Germany as well as Eugene Nida's functional equivalence translation theory, together with faithfulness and smoothness principle, which takes into consideration the grammatical habits and requirements of the installation specification based on target text readers, the translator adopts literal translation and free translation. Translation techniques include nominalization of -ing structure, rewriting of impersonal subject sentences, amplification, omission, and combination as well as takes the charms of long sentences while giving up the forms. In the fourth part, the paper lists the problems that are not solved in the translation practice and the relevant thoughts, and summarizes the experience and lessons of this translation practice.The author has initial mastery of the mechanical equipment installation specification features and translation strategies through the translation practice, and accumulates experience for translation of English for science and technology work in the future. The paper provides technical support for Electric Power Design & Research Institute with aid-project in Congo power plant boiler pump installation, and also gives a test for my translation level and ability.
