Ranger came into being earlier, originated from the class of the literati and officialdom, especially from the military officials, which were the direct source of rangers. This class played a important part in the Spring and Autumn Period. They attached to the strong power, and received orders from them, which made this group suppressed by the monarchy. When the Qin Dynasty unified strong control over society, Rangers dispersed in every corner of society, without impressive performance. However, under the inactive implementation of the Western Han Dynasty, this group became active, resulting in the chivalrous fashion at that time. Because Xiaowu emperor strengthened the centralization and forced Rangers divided, some of whom were directly integrated by monarchical power and joined to the ruling class, while some started to advocate Confucianism, like YingChuan Ranger.On the basis of the understanding of Han Fei, Sima Qian and Ban Gu et al, the connotation of Rangers is full of contradictions, who are both chivalrous, helping others in need, and contemptible, enslaving the poor and killing others for treasure. For a clearer understanding of Ranger's duplex feature, the rangers will be divided into four categories, to explore the personality of each type, which is the key to understand their duplex feature. For a better understanding of the Ranger, the relationship between their activities and local characteristics will be explored, and also the activities and their age structure will be included. Finally, the focus will be on the personality traits of the Rangers, to have a deeper understanding of Ranger connotation, and later a comparison with the Rangers thereafter will be made to reveal the unique feature of Rangers in Han.
