On C-E Translation Of Painting Text From The Perspective Of Text Typology Theory

Chinese painting contains traditional Chinese culture,and embodies the unique Chinese charm,which attracts a growing number of western people to explore it.As a reference book,encyclopaedia plays a very important role in imparting knowledge and disseminating culture.Therefore,the study on C-E translation of encyclopaedia of Chinese painting not only helps to promote cross-cultural communication,but also is of great cultural value and practical significance.Based on text typology theory raised by Peter Newmark and the translation of three parts of the first chapter of Encyclopaedia of Chinese Cultural Relic Collections(Chinese Painting)(excerpt),this thesis,as a translation study report,considering the text features and linguistic features of the source text,aims at discussing the translation methods and skills of Chinese painting text so as to provide some enlightenment and suggestions for the C-E translation of Chinese painting in the future for reference.This thesis begins with a detailed introduction to Peter Newmark's text typology theory.Based on the three major functions of language,Newmark classified different texts into expressive text,informative text and vocative text.Besides,he further proposed semantic translation and communicative translation on the basis of text typology theory,and indicated that communicative translation is used for informative and vocative texts,semantic for expressive texts.Guided by text typology theory,discussing the text features of the original,the author draws a conclusion that the excerpts of Encyclopaedia of Chinese Cultural Relic Collections(Chinese Painting)belongs to informative and vocative text,with an emphasis on informative function.Therefore,communicative translation should be adopted in the course of translation.In the light of text type and linguistic function of the original,various translation methods should be adopted during the translation of the text,such as literal translation with annotation,free translation,amplification,division and voice conversion and so on,in order to ensure that the effect produced on the readers of translation can be as close as possible to that obtained on the readers of the original.Finally,this thesis puts forward four practical suggestions and conclusions for the translation of similar texts,namely,first,Chinese painting text is feasible to be translated guided by text typology theory;second,communicative translation can be applied to the C-E translation of Chinese painting;third,it is highly required for the translator,especially their knowledge of the source and target languages,and the ability of information search and selection during the process of translation;fourth,the translator should be cautious enough to avoid omitting the information,especially for the informative text with much information.
