With the increasingly rapid development of modern economy,social pressures seem to be even more intense than ever before.At present,reading is still regarded as the first choice for people to relax themselves.Since the advent of the 21 st century,youth literature has gained a significant success within a short period of time among numerous literary genres and conquered a large number of readers.Moreover,youth literature has even become a new rival against pure literature,and it has made a huge impact on modern literary structure;leading the trend of literature.Youth literature has a wide range of audience because it caters to the psychological needs of the public.With the development of the global economy,youth literature is no longer limited to a certain country,but serves readers all over the world.Therefore,translation increasingly plays an important role in its circulation.As a type of literary translation,youth literature translation requires translators to elicit similar responses from target readers through reproducing the original meaning and style.Numerous studies show that translation is an activity endowed with cultural significance,and it is influenced by various factors to different degrees.This complies with Toury’s translation norms,which emphasizes the process of translation.At present,studies on this theory mainly focus on comparisons of earlier versions and contemporary versions of world-famous literature,while few studies have been conducted on the process of translation.Based on the English-Chinese translation of Chapter 12 of A Walk to Remember,this thesis explores translation strategies of youth literature from the perspective of Toury’s translation norms.This thesis first reviews the characteristics of youth literature.Then,it briefly describes the background,nature and classification of Toury’s translation norms.Thirdly,taking Chapter 12 of A Walk to Remember as an example,it analyzes the English-Chinese translation strategies from three aspects: preliminary norms,initial norms and operational norms.Finally,it sums up strategies in English-Chinese youth literature translation in hope of offering reference to further study. |
