In 2012,Mo Yan won the Nobel Prize for Literature and he won this prize mostly because he combines magical realism with stories.Actually,Mo Yan's classic works, such as Red Sorghum,Sandalwood Punishment and Big Breasts and Wide Hips, are all featured with the combination of magical realism and folk stories.Scholars both at home and abroad have been carrying out research on Mo Yan's works from the perspectives of magical realism, local flavor and carnivalization. There are also some scholars who have carried out research from the perspective of female image, which made it possible for us to widely read and appreciate Mo Yan's works. While illustrating Mo Yan's works, the author of this thesis tries to translate some of his short stories and finds there are many female descriptions. Therefore, this thesis is to analyze Mo Yan's works from the perspective of feminist translation theory, aiming to provide a new perspective for the further study in this field.Feminist translation theory sprang up in the 1980 s and since then, feminist translators have realized that traditional translation theory regarded translation as the attachment to the original text, which arouse discrimination against the translated text and translators, especially against women.Feminist translation theory advocates that the discrimination against women in traditional theory and practice should be reconsidered and eliminated. The original text and the translated version should be put in the same position and their relationship should be redefined.Translation is not only about language itself, but it should also be connected with ideology, social culture and customs. As a new translation theory, western feminist translation theory was brought into China in the 1980 s and since 1999,some translators have started to realize that gender was one of the factors that affected translation. At the beginning of the 21 st century, with the frequent international communication, many translation theories were brought into China and from then on,Chinese scholars started to carry out researches from the perspective of feminist translation theory.Under the guidance of Feminist translation theory, the author of this thesis carries out the research on feminist translation strategies of Mo Yan's works bycomparing the original translation with the revised translation under the guidance of feminist translation theory.Through the comparison, the author of this thesis finds that feminist translation theory can well conduct the translation of Mo Yan's works, and to illustrate this conclusion, this thesis is divided into six chapters: the first chapter introduces the research background, research method, research objectives and significance and the layout of the thesis;the second chapter summarizes the development and reception of feminist translation theory in the western countries and in China and gives a literary review of the translation studies on Mo Yan's major works;the third chapter elaborates the feminist translation theory, including the background, development and major views of feminist translation theory;the fourth chapter gives analyses of language features in Mo Yan's works separately from the aspects of words, sentence structures and text;the fifth chapter analyzes the translation strategies of Mo Yan's works from the perspective of feminist translation theory by comparing the original translation with the revised translation under the guidance of feminist translation theory;the sixth chapter summarizes the whole thesis, points out the innovation and deficiency of this thesis, and emphasizes the necessity of the development of feminist translation theory in China.Through the analysis above,it can be concluded that the research on Mo Yan's works can be conducted through the combination of translation and culture, such as feminist translation theory, which not only enriches feminist translation theory, but also provides a new perspective for the further study of the translation of Mo Yan's works.
