| The book The Return of the Cold War mainly studies the Ukrainian crisis in 2013.The translation materials are chosen from the first section of Part One,mostly describe the internal and external causes of the Ukrainian crisis as well as the changes in the relations among the European Union(UN),Russia and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization(NATO).Since November 2013,Ukraine has gone through a lot of catastrophic events, which resulted in severe economic downturn and affected the relationship between Russia and the West. The external causes of the disasters in Ukraine were mainly the contradictions between the pro-Moscow and the pro-West.The pro-West hoped to sign the political and free trade agreements, while the pro-Moscow desired to see the independence of Ukraine and sign agreements with Russia to build up close relationships, from which resulted the immediate Ukrainian crisis. The internal causes were that Russia annexed Crimea to support the separatists in the East, which infringed the interests of the West, the EU and NATO.The increased military activities of the West and Russia on the borders escalated the crisis. The content of the material is related to politics.Eugene A.Nida’s theory of “Functional Equivalence” and Peter Newmark’s theory of “Text Typology” guide the whole translation process, including sentence division and combination, omission and addition in solving the difficulties of terminologies, long sentences and discourse appearing. Moreover, relevant background information searched through various ways helps to settle the cultural problems. After the translation, the report mainly describes and summarizes the translation process, consisting of the translation task, translation procedures, case study and summary. Finally, the author has expressed her own understanding and gains of the translation, realizing that one can truly do the translation well by applying the translation theories to the practices. She will continue to study the translation theories in the future and insist on a large amount of translation practices to improve her translation skills. |
