Translation Of The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button

Dialogues take a very important position in literary works,especially in novels.Authors not only use dialogues to shape characters,create conflicts or climax to develop its plots,but also embody speakers' social status,occupations and backgrounds.Translation of dialogues may directly affect the quality of the whole novel translation.Thus,it is of great significance to explore the useful translation strategies of dialogues.This report adopts Fitzgerald's magical realism novel The Curious Case of Benjamin Button as the translation material.By translating and analyzing the dialogues in this novel,this paper summarizes four useful translation strategies based on related theories,such as using modal particles,omission,adaptation and word conversion,hoping to offer some references to further translation of dialogues.This paper can be divided into four chapters.Chapter One is the introduction to this study and its significance.Chapter Two is the description of the whole translation procedure including pre-translation preparation,process of translation and proofreading.Chapter Three gives typical cases to demonstrate the four proposed translation strategies:how to use modal particles to re-establish shots and express the speakers' psychological intension accurately;how to ensure oralization of dialogues by omitting;how to convey the author's intention and reach functional equivalence using"the freest" adaptation;and the use of word conversion comprises mainly three parts,like converting English nouns into Chinese verbs,converting English prepositions into Chinese verbs and converting English nouns into Chinese adjectives.The last chapter is the conclusion of whole translation task.
