From Lu Ping To Nan Shan

From the early 1940 s to the late 1970 s, the image of petty bourgeoisie experienced a long process of being transformed. During this period, they experienced the Yan'an Rectification Movement, the great discussion about whether petty bourgeoisie could be wrote at the beginning of the new China, the Flowers times and the Cultural Revolution. At the major premise of requiring to be transformed, the image of petty bourgeoisie still presented different characteristics in each era.This paper can be divided into four chapters. According to the time, the first chapter analyzes the works about writing of petty bourgeoisie in the Yan'an period. The second chapter analyzes the works in the Seventeen Years period. And the next chapter analyzes the works in the Cultural Revolution period. The last chapter focuses on the discussion of the reason why the image of petty bourgeoisie was became a positive image.In the Yan'an period, Wang Shiwei and Ding Ling had the biggest impact on the transformation of petty bourgeoisie. At that time, the criticism about their works officially introduced the topic of petty bourgeoisie transformation. As the programmatic document of literary creation, Mao Zedong's Speech on Yan'an Forum on Literature and Art also significantly distinguished petty bourgeoisie intellectuals from workers and peasants, that provided a solid theoretical foundation for the transformation activities. The works about petty bourgeoisie in the Seventeen Years' literature experienced the process of looking for an opportunity, rising rapidly in the Flowers times and then being harshly suppressed, and the works emerging in this period showed a strong foresight. The works depicting petty bourgeoisie characters in the Seventeen Years not only thought about how they embarked on the road of revolution, but also began to think about love, marriage, daily life and so on. In the Cultural Revolution period, under the face of increasingly stringent writing requirements, writers would be considered as Right deviation or Revisionists with the slightest mistake. However, works about petty bourgeoisie began to spread in the underground literature, which had a tremendous impact on intellectuals thinking about Cultural Revolution and their situation and value.If the emergence of Lu Ping in Yan'an period is on behalf of the emergence of the topic of transforming, and the emergence of Nan Shan in the middle and later of Cultural Revolution is on behalf of the rebirth of the petty bourgeoisie. It also convinces that the advantages of the petty bourgeoisie didn't disappear in the long process of transformation. From the image of petty bourgeoisie, we can see the spirit at that time, the toughness and the challenge power. Further more, we can see their aesthetic interest also played a positive role in daily life. Because of that, the image of petty bourgeoisie is written by more and more writers and loved by more and more readers in the new era.
