As a quintessence of Chinese culture, Chinese Ink Painting obtains unique aesthetical characteristics and presents the connotational aesthetic tastes from oriental culture background. With the approaching of PC and commodity Graphic Cards with computational power more so than ever, the hardware factor for convert Photorealistic Rendering image into Oriented Ink Style Non-Photorealistic Rending image is possessed. However, the relevant algorithms for rendering Ink Style 3D image in realtime is still immature and drawing researchers` attention. This paper presents a series of paper based ink simulation approaches and realtime ink style animation rendering methods that can be achieved on commodity level low cost hardware. A novel paper-ink simulating model based on Porous Mechanics is presented for simulating ink dispersion in Chinese Xuan painting paper. Based on this paper-ink model, an approach for rendering ink style animation with the idea of Temporal Coherence is proposed. Compared with previous works, the computational power saving paper-ink simulating model convergence much faster than previous similar simulation model hence spending less time to simulating fully-spreaded ink in paper. As to realtime Ink style animation rendering, the approach presented in this paper can improve the image lagging and tearing problems deriving from temporal incoherence. Based on t he experiments, the rendering results from the implementation program based on the appraoch presented in this paper is more visual appealing than the results from previous works, and convey better Chinese ink style effects. This paper presents following works:(1) A virtual paper-ink model based on the concept of Porous Material and Capillary Mechanics is presented. Mathematical description of this model including physical properties of paper and ink is given.(2) With the model from(1), this paper proposes an approach for simulating ink dispersion in paper based on the paper-ink model. The govern equations of this novel simulating approach is Darcy's Law from Poroumechanics and conservation of mass principle.(3) Based on the model and simulating approach in(1) and(2), this paper presents a series of methods for rendering realtime ink style animation with the inspiration of Temporal Coherence. These methods render ink animation by continuously adding and removing ink based on the luminance of the photorealisitc rendering image. A Lumiance – Ink concentration converting function is presented to assist the addingremoving process and the removing method is achieved with the help of Perlin Noise. This paper also presents the implementation of the paper-ink model and rendering methods with a framework based on Compute Shader and GPU, in order to test the idea presented in this paper.
