Since the first protestant missionary Morrison came to China in 1807, protestant missionaries have begun a far-reaching influence of the modern missionary work in China. Karl Friedrich August Gützlaff, a Prussian missionary, is one of the most representative figures. When Gützlaff was a child, he had a dream of traveling the heathendom. In his youth, Gützlaff has met Morrison who is London missionary exploiting to the protestant missionaries in modern China. Then he was more interested in China and aroused the strong determination to start missionary work in China. From sailed along China coast for the first time in 1831 to died at Hong Kong in1851, Gützlaff's activity in China was very multifarious; Activities, such as religion, political and cultural. Gützlaff opened up new ways to spread the Gospel of Christ in many fields. Therefore, the missionary thought of Gützlaff and his practice in China and effects are representative. At the same time, Gützlaff had many times to change his identity, so he is also a controversial figure. The key thesis falls into three parts. The first part is missionary work. The author selected three parts: early travelled along China coast, created the Chinese Union and assisted the spread of Lutheran in China. The second part is political activities. Gützlaff participated in the opium war, played role in the Sino-British treaty negotiations and appointed by the British Hong Kong after the opium war. The third part is cultural activities. Gützlaff made a contribution in Sino-Western cultural exchange. Through the investigation on Gützlaff's activities in China, we can find that although Gützlaff's subjective purpose is to spread the Gospel of Christ in China, but objectively, he initiated the pattern transformation mode of Sino-Western relations to some extent, promoted the spread of the protestant religion in China and promoted the early of Sino-Western cultural exchange.
