A Project Report On The Translation Of Making Waves:Politics, Propaganda, And The Emergence Of The Imperial Japanese Navy,1868-1922 (Chapter 3)

Translation of English historical materials is of great importance due to its high research value. Making Waves:Politics, Propaganda, and the Emergence of the Imperial Japanese Navy,1868-1922 is a famous work about the history of Japanese navy expansion. On the basis of translation practice of Chapter Three in this book, this project report analyzes major issues and difficulties including the translation of Japanese proper nouns, specific difficult words, long sentences, and the cohesion of discourse. Corresponding to each difficulty, the report explores feasible translation strategies and gives suggestions on how to translate the whole text, including transliteration and conforming to the conventional expressions for translating Japanese proper nouns, amplification, omission, and conversion for translating some difficult words, remaining or changing word order, division of sentences and negation for translating English long sentences, and lexical device for discourse cohesion. The report also discusses the recommendations for future translation projects and the limitation of this translation.
