Lang Tu Teng is one of the greatest literary works that describes and studies the Inner-Mongolian grassland wolves. The novel takes the wolves as the narration subject and tells a story about an educated youth who lived together and conflicted with prairie wolves and nomadic people when he was a production team member on Inner-Mongolian grassland in the sixties and seventieth of the last century.In 2008, the famous American Sinologist Goldblatt translated it into English. The English version Wolf Totem was spreaded to western countries and aroused a tremendous response. In recent years, more and more domestic and foreign scholars have started to study the English version, but few scholars have touched upon the language style of Lang Tu Teng. Therefore, it is of some realistic significance in applying stylistic marker theory to making an in-depth analysis or research on this topic.Based on the analysis and identification of literary language's stylistic markers, the stylistic marker theory put forward by Professor Liu Miqing further explores the translation skills and methods used in translating the original literary language style into English language and makes a proper evaluation on the reproduction and loss of the language style in the process of stylistic translation. Compared with pure linguistic point of view, stylistic marker theory can be applied in analyzing language style from two perspectives:formal stylistic markers and non-formal stylistic markers which are more conducive to the objective understanding of novel language style and can also serve as a guidance for the translation practice.Up to now, it seems that scholars at home and abroad have seldom conducted researches on the English version Wolf Totem from the perspective of stylistic markers. Therefore, based on the stylistic markers theory proposed by Liu Miqing and by setting up a mini-database, combining theory with practice, this thesis attempts to focus on the research of Lang Tu Teng by Jiang Rong and make a quantitative, qualitative and comparative analysis on two kinds of stylistic markers:one refers to the original formal markers, the other involves non-formal markers. Besides, the thesis also makes an in-depth exploration of the degree of original language style reproduction and probes into the translating strategies used for translating these stylistic markers. The purpose of this research is to help the translation researchers or possible readers to better understand and appreciate the language art and style of literary works and meanwhile provide a brand-new research perspective for the study on the Chinese-to-English translation of Lang Tu Teng.Through the research, four major findings can be concluded. Firstly, through research on the stylistic markers in Lang Tu Teng, the novel covers four kinds of formal markers including phonological markers, lexical markers, syntactic markers and markers of rhetorical devices and two kinds of non-formal markers including symbolic ways of expression and emotional description of the writer's inherent quality. Secondly, the stylistic markers play an important role in the formation of the language style of Lang Tu Teng. It is found that the exquisite and vivid narration of the plots further demonstrates the grand narratives, abundant details and multiple themes. The language used in the famous novel Lang Tu Teng written by Jiang Rong has strong characteristics of the era and remarkable personal features and has also revealed the writer's thoughts and emotions. Thirdly, in the process of translating stylistic markers, Goldblatt applied various translation methods such as corresponding, recasting, substituting, free translation, literal translation and literal translation with explanation, omission and adding to reproduce the original language style in target language to the greatest extent. Literal translation and free translation are the most frequently used translation methods. Corresponding and recasting are only used to render phonological markers. Substituting is mainly used to translate syntactic markers. Omission and adding are only used in the translation of non-formal markers. Fourthly, the stylistic marker theory can obviously provide a feasible and practical theoretical perspective for studying the translation of Lang Tu Teng.
