A Study On The Stylistic Reproduction From The Perspective Of Stylistic Marker Theory

As an important literary genre, autobiography not only reconstructs the distant past, but also generates aesthetic joys to readers with its creative literary devices. Every autobiography possesses its own style, which also represents various types of appeal. Thus, in order to expose target language readers to autobiographies in diverse styles from all over the world, translation and introduction are needed. During the translation, translators should pay special attention to translation of style, which is the essence of autobiographies, and also where higher requirements for translation lies. The problem of translatability of style was controversial among scholars, most of whom regarded styles as translatable, and speculated that the principles of translation of style stands in the adaptability of the translated text to the source text. Based on the Stylistic Marker Theory, and taking the translation of You Can't Be Neutral on a Moving Train as an example, this thesis intends to recognize the original style of source text with four stylistic markers, namely Lexical Markers, Register Markers, Markers of Sentence Structure, and Markers of Figure of Speech, and then conduct the translation of style with several translation strategies, namely imitation, remolding, and decolorating, to reproduce the style of the source text to the greatest extent, and to expose readers to the full understanding of the source text.The elements on and beneath the surface play critical roles in the style of an autobiography. Thus, in order to recognize and reproduce the style of the source text, we must be aware of the style during translation. The gaping differences between English and Chinese generates distinctive features in both languages. Thus, the author will use imitation, remolding and decolorating to achieve style reproduction to the greatest extent.The author hopes that this thesis could be referred to as needed for translation of autobiographies.
