Xiao Hong's homeland consciousness is one of the outstanding characteristics in her works, which is relatively complex on the whole as Xiao Hong surrounded by the modernization has held the complicated emotions towards home. Surviving between the tradition and the modernization, she has a rebellious spirit for the traditional homeland, but at the same time, she is attempting to pursue for the ideal civilized home And this helps to cultivate an unique expressive way for her homeland consciousness. Under the frame of her personal experience and through the thread of her works, this paper is attempting to make a comprehensive analysis of her complex emotions towards home by adopting the text reading method and the literature analysis method.The paper is composed of five chapters, three chapters serving as its main body together with other two chapters: introduction and conclusion.The introduction chapter is a section that puts emphasis on the introduction of homeland consciousness and the previous studies on the homeland consciousness on the basis of which the research approaches in this paper will be carefully illustrated.The first chapter is titled as “Finding Home: Escape and Refuge” where Xiao Hong's life experience and the historical background are illustrated to understand better her literary context. In her whole life, Xiao Hong has experienced the following process: leaving home,finding home and returning home during which the homeland consciousness has always controlled her life. The loss of love in the childhood, the misfortunes in the adulthood, all of these has left her with a sense of homelessness, fortunately, in her later life, she has finally found the ideal mooring bank for her wandering spirits in the Hulan River.Chapter 2 is named as “complex feelings towards homeland: Criticism and Identity”.And in the process of looking for homes, Xiao Hong has also held an objective and rational view to everything around her including things, scenes, person and worldly wisdom. This chapter can be divided into three sections which will focus on her both criticism and recognition of homeland, on the ground of which we can easily conclude that Xiao Hong has been always longing for an ideal homeland filled with warmth and love, freedom and democracy, peace and happiness. Rooted deeply in her personal life experience and the strong gender consciousness, she has shown her concerns for the weak and the homeless and hercriticism for the national evils. At the same time, due to the deep homeland attachment, Xiao Hong has recognized and praised the beauty of life, the beauty of nature and the beauty of human together with the rational criticism.Chapter 3 is seen as “The Meaning Exploring for Xiao Hong's Homeland Consciousness”.In this chapter, we will attempt to probe into the meanings of Xiao Hong's homeland consciousness by analyzing its uniqueness, its influences and significance. At first, the mental and artistic uniqueness of Xiao Hong's homeland consciousness will be explained by comparison. Then, based on the influences that her homeland consciousness has on the contemporary writers, especially Chi Zijian, it can be easily found that her homeland consciousness has a totally positive significance on her life.The homeland awareness has been always with Xiao Hong in her whole life during which she has experienced leaving home, finding home and returning home. And Her emotions have also changed due to her tortuous life experiences and complex mentality. The state “away from home” has been a great driving force for her to explore the mentally “at home” state. By analyzing and interpreting her homeland consciousness, we can definitely found the complex emotions that Xiao Hong has towards homeland and her desire for an ideal homeland.
