The Study On The Hero Journey Model Of Marvel Universe Films

At the beginning of the establishment of Marvel Comics, it pointed clearly: the importance of the world is to ensure the comics which produced by the same company has the integral continuity. A relative time happens simultaneously in one book. Thus, at the same time, everything in the same world will be affected. So, Marvel Studios produced the series movies independently for the roles appeared in the comics publications. A huge movie program has been launched which is called Marvel Cinematic Universe. In this series movie, characters and incidents build an unreal world which is separated from the comics. However, as the component parts of the main universe in Marvel Comics, they build the real action universal movies which are made of the same universal elements, plot settings, main characters. It is separated from the series of Earth-616 and Earth-1610, and numbered Earth-199999 which has drawn the extensive attention since its appearance. In 2015, the second phase was finished successfully. Totally, 13 movies have already accumulated 9 billion dollars around the world, which created a legend of the real action movies which are adapted by comics. With the similar style and same subject, the films of Marvel have always attracted Chinese audience, as well as taken the majority share of Chinese film box-office. Moreover, it is incredible that Marvel keeps almost 5% incomes among 34 American high-technological films every year.Taking 13 Marvel Universe films as the example, including Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, The Avengers, etc. as the example, this thesis used the Hero Journey Model which was raised by Joseph Campbell in his master work The Hero with AThousand Faces to analyze the building of the Marvel cartoon characters based on the known traditional film narrative and the plot arrangement of the hero journey. Thus this thesis made further investment on the reasons why the series of Marvel Universe films can attract Chinese audience.The thesis was the first one to choose Marvel films as the objects and sort out the hero image model and hero setting plot systematically. At the same time, taking the method of Hero Journey Model, it also analyzed the prototypes of the heroes and plot settings of the films, and found the reasons of the development and constantly changing of the universe heroes.After doing research of the Marvel Universe films, this thesis tried to analyze the modes of the film creation in order to spread the common grounds of the same type films to discuss the lessons which Chinese films could learn from and the road of film industry development.Using Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Marvel’s The Avengers, and other 13 movies as the example and taking the hero’s journey raised in the master piece The Hero with A Thousand Faces by Joseph Campbell as the theoretic basis, this paper analyzed specifically how Marvel builds the various comics characters on the basis of the traditional film narrative, as well as how to set the plots of hero journey.
