Abstract/Summary:
This report is written based on the interpreter’s interpreting project of High Precision Aluminum Sheets in Shandong Weiqiao Pioneering Group from July 2014 to October 2015. By applying Effort Model to this project, the interpreter discusses interpreting obstacles and corresponding coping strategies with specific cases analyses.Firstly, this report introduces the background of this project, including the time, the place, foreign cooperative partners and task requirements. The interpreter makes the preparation work from the perspective of technical terms, collection of the relevant information, accents and presupposition of potential problems. The interpreter also elaborates three different types of interpreting tasks—conference interpreting, escort interpreting and exhibition interpreting. Then the interpreter gives a detailed description of two phases of the Effort Model in consecutive interpreting,i.e., comprehensive stage and speech production stage. Problem triggers, such as unfavorable interpreting environment, specialized knowledge deficiency, accent and weak psychological quality are main reasons for unbalanced energy distribution in consecutive interpreting. The interpreter believes that interpreters’ energy should be reasonably distributed to listening and analysis effort, note-taking effort and short-term memory effort to reach a successful output delivery. Total energy required for the interpreting task must be equal or less than interpreters’ mental processing capacity. Moreover, the application of the Effort Model to this engineering project is elaborated. The interpreter analyzes accent obstacles in listening effort, figure obstacles in note-taking and short term-memory effort, intercultural communication obstacles in expression effort with specific cases in light of Effort Model. The analysis indicates that interpreters should have a thorough understanding of the source language in order to achieve balanced effort distribution in engineering interpreting.Interpreters are supposed to save efforts by adopting omission, literal translation and additional interpreting strategies to increase the capability of coordinating effort. At last, the interpreter makes self-assessment through seeking feedbacks from both the Chinese manager and foreign engineers.Interpreters are suggested to deliberately apply the Effort Model to their interpreting practices. The analysis is proven to be quite effective for the interpreter in having a faster response to unfamiliar professional terms. This report indicates that the Effort Model is of great value in guiding interpreters to distribute their energy scientifically and complete a successful interpreting task in the engineering interpreting.
