On The Art Of Hua Yan's Bird Paintings

Hua Yan(yan),who specialize in Chinese flower and bird painting,figures,landscapes,calligraphy,especially known as Chinese flower and bird painting,was a distinguished painter during the Qing dynastyand brought new style for then middle period of Qing dynasty art field.Based on the writer's statistics,nowadaysover60 pieces of professionalpapers about Hua Yan's art researches had been reported.Among them,onepiece of Ph.D.thesis,nine pieces of master's thesis,over fifty pieces of journal papers.According to the difference of research contents,these papers can be divided into three categories:First,the research papers of Huayan'stotalartistic achievements,these papers systematically explains Hua Yan'sChinese flower and bird paintings,figures,landscapes and poetryand so on;Second,the verification of Hua yan's whole life and the inherited papers from his mentor,such as Xue's "Genealogy of Hua Yan and Min Ting Hua Shi";The last,the paper specific to a certain Huayan's representative works.In them,there is few study which is specifically for Huayan's high achievements on "Feathers" painting,only relevant discussionscattered in corners or fragments in various types of paper without systematized.On this basis,in order to better heritage Hua Yan's feathers paintingart,improve the Hua Yan's feathers paintings a clear and systematical understanding.The author focused onfeathers paintings,mainly professionally discusses thefeathers paintingsstyle featuresand creative concept.This dissertation starts with the heritage bird paintings of Hua Yan to make a thorough classification and study with the aim to fill in the blank of this aspect.Now 99 bird paintings in 77 works have been collected and classified in terms of different painting styles.His features in brush moving,color setting and shaping are summarized by case studies and comparative studies of his bird paintings and classic works of previous dynasties.By case studies of his painting composition,shaping and brush moving etc.,his aesthetic pursuit can be concluded as “ethereal,simple and flexible”.Combining the historical background and his personal experiences,we thoroughly analyze the reasons of the formation of his aesthetic pursuit.Finally,by summarizing the influence of his bird paintings on painting skills and ideas of later ages,the artistic traits of his bird paintings and its status in the history of bird-and-flower painting are further proved.
