The Study On Wenzhou Place-Name Associated With Xie Lingyun

This thesis is about place names in Wenzhou which are related to Xie Lingyun.It bases on toponymy,linguistics,and culturology.Through the textual research of exact Wenzhou place-name,drawing pictures of Xie Lingyun’s situation map,and discussing linguistic features of these place names to find the culture connotation inside the name places.On the one hand,it triggers some new ideas on the study of Xie Lingyun;on the other hand,it can provide reference for Wenzhou place-name study so as to better protect,inherit,and expand Wenzhou toponymy culture.This thesis consists of six parts:The first part is introduction.It points out the object and range of the research.It also determines the significance of this research through further studying the Xie Lingyun’s study and recent use of Wenzhou place names.The second part demonstrates three major sources of making Wenzhou place names related with Xie Lingyun:his nature poems,travel notes and other names in memory of other people.There has been a close connection between Wenzhou place-names and Xie Lingyun.The third part discusses the classification and distribution of place names from the perspective of synchronic.These place names fall into three categories:historical names,contemporary names and planning names.These names spread which is based on Lucheng District.By following the way of logical analysis in toponymy,linguistics,the fourth part gives a comprehensive overview of place names associated with Xie Lingyun,based on aspects of pronunciation,vocabulary and grammar,rhetoric.Phonetically,these place names are primarily in three syllables,which create a harmonious rhythm in tone.In the aspect of vocabulary,they are mostly in the structure of “proper noun+generalname” and general names are words in the region of terrain,water and human history.Proper nouns are words which are descriptive,narrative and have implied meanings.In terms of grammar,compound place names and phrases of the place names is given priority with partial formal syntax structure.On the rhetorical they mainly use the rhetoric such as metaphor,metonymy,reference.The fifth part gives an in-depth look into the cultural implication of place names associated with Xie Lingyun,which reflects in a mixed culture of appreciating Wenzhou landscape,farming-studying,traditional architectural and travel.The sixth part is the summary of this article.
