Under the background of globalization, cultural exchanges between countries of the world have been becoming increasingly frequent and close. But because of the differences in languages and culture, people will always encounter various obstacles and difficulties in the process of communication. However, as a bridge for people to communicate in the crosslanguage, cross-national and cross-cultural environment, translation has undoubtedly played an important role in promoting the development of human civilization and social progress.From the perspective of cultural communication, the basic task of translation is to introduce foreign culture or spread the national culture. Translation is an inevitable way in cultural dissemination and at the same time, it also decides the effect of the spread of culture.The translation of literary works is an important form of cultural communication and dissemination. But looking back to the status of Chinese literature “going out”, we will clearly find that there is a big gap between the Chinese translation of foreign literature and the foreign translation of Chinese literature. In terms of those Chinese works which have been translated abroad, the situation of their spread and acceptance is not optimistic. In order to solve these problems, this study, taking An Empty Room: stories translated by Toming Jun Liu as an example, and combining with the theory of Cross-cultural Communication, will discuss how this translation activity follows the rule of cross-cultural communication and effectively achieves the goal of cultural communication and dissemination through the analysis of the feature of the source text selected as well as the translation strategy formulated by Toming Jun Liu, so as to provide successful experience and reference to Chinese literature“going out”.Through the in-depth research, the author finds that: first of all, in this translation activity,Toming Jun Liu selects Mu Xin's works as the “communicating material” which is enriched with humanistic connotation and cosmopolitan aesthetic thinking; then, in the selection of translation strategy, Mr. Toming adopts such a kind of translation strategy — foreignizing strategy first, domesticating strategy second. Such a way of “encoding” does not only retain the cultural characteristics of China, but also take care of the target readers' reading habits.These conditions above have ensured the smooth dissemination and acceptance of the translated book.This thesis makes studies of translation activity from the perspective of cross-cultural communication. The enlightenment on Chinese literature “going out” lies in that: overseas Chinese translators do have obvious advantages in translating and disseminating Chinese literary works, because they are accomplished with English and Chinese languages and SinoWestern culture, and at the same time, they know well about the reading habits of foreign readers. Therefore, when select the “communicator”, we should take the group of overseas Chinese translators into consideration. Besides, we also need to concentrate on the humanity and cosmopolitan of the literary works and advocate foreignizing strategy. Only in this way can we better promote the spread of Chinese literature in foreign countries.
