Fang Gan, who styled himself as “Xiongfei”, was born in Tonglu,Mu state, a famous hermit poet in late Tang dynasty. After his death, he was conferred unofficial posthumous title “Mister Xuanying” by the disciples. He was born in 809, and died in 886, at the age of 78. He experienced emperor Xianzong, emperor Muzong, emperor Jingzong, emperor Wenzong, emperor Wenzong, emperor Wuzong, emperor Xuanzong, emperor Yizong, emperor Xizong in his life, when the social was unrest, the people were destitute. According to Jian Jie Lu by He Guangyuan, we know that Fang Gan failed in the imperial examinations several times just because of his ugly appearance, so he lived in seclusion in Kuaiji, and fished by the Mirror Lake in a rage. Wang Gui, who's the prefecture chief of Kuaiji, once recommended Fang Gan for imperial censor, but he died suddenly, and then Fang Gan had no chance to be an offical in the rest of his life anymore. After his death, the prime minister Zhang Wenwei and others presented to the court to give fifteen famous traditional scholars who didn't achieve fame in the former dynasty fame, and Fang Gan was one of them.Fang Gan was famous for his poems when he was alive, and he had won the appreciation of Yao He. Most of the people with whom he had a close relationship, or wrote and sent poems to each other, were men of literature and writing, with a good taste, such as Li Qunyu, Li Pin, Tao Xiang, Zheng Rengui, Zheng Gu, Guan Xiu, Duan Chengshi, and so on.At first, his collection of poems was organized by his disciples Yang Yan and monk Juyuan, they collected more than three hundred and seventy poems. At present, there're ten more editions of his collection of poems, while the number of poems included in them is different. Now The Complete Collection of Tang Poems compiled by emperor Kangxi collects more poems than the other editions as it contains three hundred and forty-nine poems, but some of the poems are still in doubt, need us to prove who're the true authors. The numbers of poems in the ancient rare editions are all less than three hundred and twenty, obviously, his poems lost in serious condition. Also, there're no woks more comprehensive or detailed in the collation or annotation of his poems. This thesis is based on the previous research, to collect and consult more of his poetry versions, for existing transcripts, block-printed,photocopies of Ming and Qing Dynasties, the Republic of China. There are the ten volume of Mister Yuanying's Poems and the ten volume of Mister Xuanying's Poems which are both the transcripts in the MingDynasty, the ten volume of Mister Xuanying's Poems and a volume of set outside poetry transcripts in the Qing Dynasty, ten volume of Mister Yuanying's Poems in Hundreds of Poems In the Tang Dynasty published by the Qin Chuan House, including block-printed of the reign of emperor Kangxi and the collation of it, photocopy of the Harvard University, lithographed edition of the Saoye Printing House in the Republic of China, a total of four kinds, and The Complete Collection of Tang Poems compiled by emperor Kangxi( from volume 648 to volume 653),photocopy of Xuanying's Poems in Si Ku Quan Shu, all of which added up to a total of ten. And seven kinds are rare editions. Then on this basis,I choose the ten volume rare book of Mister Xuanying's Poems in the Ming Dynasty as the dibon, proofread the other versions,to make a comprehensive collation for Fang Gan's poems( including the eight poems in the book of The Complement Poetry of the Tang Dynasty wrriten by Mr. Chen Shangjun), and then make a more detailed annotation for the geographic names, official's names, names, historical facts, ancient laws and regulations, literary quotations, verses taken off the meaning of predecessors' verses, difficult words and sentences, and so on, which appear in his poems, in order to provide a better edition for the study of Fang Gan's poems in the academic circles in the future.
