A Report On The Translation Of Australia Business Names Registration Act 2011 (Excerpts)

The wide use of reduced clauses is a common phenomenon in normative documents, particularly in legislative documents, and it is also an important feature that distinguishes from other genres. From the perspective of logical structure of legal norms, a lot of reduce conditional clauses as postpositive attributive, legal norms must meet some constitutive requirements, that are, hypothesis, behavior, sanction, to satisfy the legal reasoning mode of syllogism. Reduced clauses are clauses which reduced relative pronouns, including attributive clauses, relative clauses, and adverbial clauses. Such reduced clauses are always reflected as phrases. This translation report is based on the translating practice of Business Names Registration Act 2011. As revealed in the translation material, reduced clauses can be categorized into two groups, i.e. reduced attributive clauses and reduced adverbial clauses. Reduced attributive clauses can be categorized into past participles or present participles reduced from clauses,antecedents followed by prepositional phrases or adjectives. The author deems that such reduced clauses can be translated in methods of inversion, amplification, conversion, and omission. The author makes classifications of reduced clauses and then proposes appropriate translation strategies accordingly. The author hopes this report and strategies obtained in the course of the translation can be used for reference or guidance in future translation practice.
