Patent is an exclusive right granted by a sovereign state to an inventor for a limited period of time for implementing its inventions. As the rapid development of technology and the deepening of reform and opening up, more and more people came to realize the importance of intellectual property rights and they have made every effort to protect their IPR(short for intellectual property right). At the same time, there are more and more foreign enterprises beginning to file patent applications in China in order to protect their commercial benefits. There is no doubt that patent translation has played a significant role in the course of enterprise internationalization. This translation report is based on the writer’s part-time translation practice for RWS(short for RWS Group, one of the world’s leading patent translation and patent search companies). In this report, the writer tries to find out the translation strategies suitable for patent translation under the guidance of functional translation theory. This translation report includes four parts. Firstly, the writer makes a brief introduction to the background, characteristics and requirements of the task. Secondly, the writer gives a detailed description of the whole translation process, including pre-translation, during translation and post-translation. Thirdly, it comes to the main body of this practice, the case analysis part, in which the writer divides the patent text into three parts and, based on their respective characteristics, conducts the analysis through detailed examples. Fourthly, and also the last conclusion part, the writer summarized the practice.Through this translation practice, the write has come to the conclusion that: i) a translator should be a master of both source language and target language; ii) the translator should make sufficient preparation before every translation project begins; iii) the translator should be familiar with some tools like CAT and desktop dictionaries in order to work with high efficiency and to ensure the consistency of terms in translation; and iv) the translator should always have a high sense of responsibility.
