Chinese independent documentary produced and developed since 1990's, but it developed slightly slowly due to the limitation of the hardware devices and the restriction of the external environment, as a result, some related works are uneven. Until early in the new century, Chinese independent documentary came to life again because of the upgrading of equipment and the comparative relaxed external environment. And Xu Tong as one of the Chinese independent documentary filmmakers in the new generation after 2000, his style is unique and shows a strong sense of modernity. He pays attention to the marginalized people who are rejected by the mainstream elite culture. He trys to manifest a different, unknown prospect which against the rapid developedsociety of China.His documentaries are highly controversial, and his<Wheat Harvest>,<FortuneTeller> and<Shattered> are most attractive. The three documentaries are based on the "vagrant" to expand his narration. The reason for coming up with the concept of "vagrant" is that all of the characters and environment in the three works are deeply meet the definition of "vagrant" culture and its characteristics. The essence of "vagrant" is a kind of life condition, which is associated without fixed abode and formal social occupation. The vagrant people exist in the edge of society and culture, stay politically loose anarchism and resist the mainstream cultural values.The reason for us to pay attention to Xu Tong and his works is not only to reconsider the contemporary mainstream culture and recognize the "vagrant" culture, but also to find a new creation path and perspective of documentary. This paper will analysis the three works-<Wheat Harvest>,<Fortune Teller> and <Shattered> from the perspectives of style, theme, character, audio-visual language and so on and make a comparation with other documentaries to find its unique style.
