A Mimic Report On World Bank Group President Jim Yong Kim’s Speech

As a mimic interpretation on English to Chinese interpreting, this report takes World Bank Group President Jim Yong Kim’s speechwhich delivered at the Center for Strategic and International Studies and at Georgetown University,respectively, asmimic interpretation material. In particular, thisreport analyzes the keynote speech to discuss some interpreting skills as well as mistakes and problems arising from the interpretation process.This report briefly introduces the task,the interpreting preparation and some basic information about speech interpretation. The “case analysis” is the main body of this report.In this part, examples are selected out for further analysis from two perspectives:(1) the use of interpreting skills like “literal interpreting”, “free interpreting”, “addition”, “the adjustment of sentence order” and “the adjustment of voice”.(2) theanalysis of problems like hesitation and misinterpretation.On top of that, the author also put forward some suggestions to solve out the problems.By way of analyzing typical cases, the author came to realize that(1) having a well-prepared preparation and encyclopedic knowledge is critical to achieve a desired interpreting result;(2) to complete the interpretation task nice and well, the interpreter cannot over-stress word-to-word interpretation, instead the interpreter’s subjective initiative has an important role to play.(3) keeping an eye on the latest development of the world is an important guarantee to the outcome of interpreting.At the end of the day, the author wishes that the successes and failures that drawn from this report will offer some help to other people who are interested in speech interpreting.
