An Interpreting Report Of International Photographer Invitation Exhibition Of Lens Of The World Focusing On Harbin

Tremendous changes have taken place in the city of Harbin since the reform and opening-up policy was implemented. Although Harbin, one of the most important cities in northeast China, has made great achievements in its influence all over the world, it is still faced with deficiencies in lower popularity. The International Photographer Invitation Exhibition of Lens of the World Focusing on Harbin,sponsored by Harbin Municipal Government and the Publicity Department of the Harbin Municipal Committee and undertaken by Harbin Pharmaceutical Group Holding Co., Ltd. was opened on January 8, 2015, with the theme of “Oriental Paris—Stories in the Photo Frame”. I was lucky to be chosen as the liaison interpreter for 5 of the foreign photographers.In the prelude of the interpreting task, I considered very carefully of the possible problems as accents, cross-cultural communications, and technical terminologies etc. that may appear in the course of the liaison interpreting. Therefore, the preparations of the parallel texts and other materials needed are of great importance to the final success of the interpreting task. Under the guidance of Skopos rule, coherence rule and fidelity rule of the Skopos Theory, good preparations are made in the perspective of accents, culture, technical terminologies, interpreting skills and interpreting software. In the process of the interpreting, such interpreting strategies as transliteration,literal translation, free translation, semantic translation, communicative translation are adopted to solve the interpreting problems from loan words, cultural differences and other relevant factors. In addition, interpreting skills and means as amplification, omission, embedding, paraphrasing, euphemistic expression and etc are employed to solve the interpreting problems as slangs, long and short sentences, sensitive topics, professional terminology, etc. in the midst of the interpreting practice. When the interpreting task came to an end, the author summarized experiences and made good use of literature review, dictionary, interpreting feedback, online forum and other channels to summarize the pros and cons of the interpreting task as well as exchanged views with classmates, colleagues and advisers on this interpreting task with a view to optimizing the target texts and better gaining access to interpreting strategies and skills.In accordance with the status quo of liaison interpreting in China, the required qualities for a qualified interpreter are concluded: good command of English and Chinese languages; bilingual cultural knowledge; professional knowledge and the proficient use of information technology and a solid basis of interpreting theories. The interpreting experiences and deficiencies are concluded in the areas of importance of pre-interpreting preparations and interpreting strategies and skills as well as full utilization of relevant interpreting software. The author hopes that the paper will provide certain reference value for future interpreting teaching and relevant interpreting work and raise people's understanding on the liaison interpreting from the respect of academics.
