After the appearance of San Yan and Er Pai, Simulating vernacular novels reached a peak again because of Li Yu's short novels, such as the Silent Drama, Jade connected-city, Twelve Towers. The Silent Drama consists of 12 chapters, Jade connected-city 18 pieces, Twelve Towers twelve tales which are titled after the names of buildings. There are quite a few difficult words and phrases in the novels which brought about reading problems for our moderns. Therefore, the explanation of these words and phrases not only can solve our reading problems, but also has certain referential value for the lexical research of the late Ming and early Qing dynasties.This study adopts literature research methods like paraphrase based on context and character structural analysis to interpret the difficult words and phrases in Li Yu's short novels. This thesis is divided into three parts. The introduction part introduces simulating vernacular novels of Li Yu and its research situation at home and abroad, research methods and research significance. The main body is composed of two chapters. Chapter one classifies the explanation of difficult words and phrases. Nouns can be divided into person name class, material name class, thing name class, address class ans so on. Verbs can be split into common verb and proper verb. And there are some other different categories, such as adjective, adverb. Chapter two interprets the special meaning of idioms in combination with dictionary explanation and cultural background. The conclusion part makes a summary of the whole thesis and puts forwards its innovation. Meanwhile, it points out the deficiencies and future direction.
