Translation Report On Promotional Brochure Of Shanxi Merchants' Compounds

Shanxi merchants,especially the merchants who initiated the draft bank system in China's history for the first time,once had great renown in the history of China for their wide trade routes across the country.Also their creation of the long and splendid culture of Shanxi merchants has left a glorious chapter in Chinese modern history.Translation is a purposeful activity.The strategies and methods of translation are decided by the purpose of the text,which is an important criterion for measuring the level of translation quality.This thesis,with the Skopos Theory as theoretical guidance and the three principles of Skopos Theory as the translation criterion,takes the English version of The Promotional Brochure of Shanxi Merchants' Compounds as an example and investigates and analyzes the problems encountered in the process of translation in order to evoke more foreign tourists' consumer interests and promote the culture of Shanxi merchants.The culture of Shanxi merchants is a symbol of cultural tourism in Shanxi,whose inheritance and development of the culture itself also have extraordinary value and significance for study.Because the tourism concerning Shanxi merchants has its unique features,namely its rich cultural connotation,the translator first briefly described the development and prosperity factors of Shanxi merchants,and then gave detailed introduction and analysis of the representatives of Shanxi merchants,including the Courtyard of Family Qiao,the Wang's Grand Courtyard,the Qu Family's Compound,the Cao Family's Compound and the Chang Mansion from the perspective of cultural connotation of Shanxi merchants.Combining the German functionalist translation theory with some specific examples in the tourism brochures of Shanxi merchants,the translator gave detailed statement and analysis and put forward some practical translation methods in terms of cultural translation,namely paraphrase,transliteration,amplification and omission.
