Report On Chinese Translation Of Go Set A Watchman(Excerpts)

Along with the frequent cultural exchanges between China and other countries in the world,the constantly pouring foreign culture unconsciously influences us.Therefore,the translation of literature plays an important role in cross-cultural communication.Meanwhile,the translation of literature has very important practical meaning for the exchange and spreading between Chinese and foreign culture.The translation practice is based on the new book—Go Set a Watchman by a contemporary American female writer—Harper Lee.The book tells the story of the heroine,Jean Louise,back from New York to visit her old father,having found her father's paranoid concept to the black,she feels very sad,fearful and confused,and results in the values conflict between father and daughter.This report excerpts four chapters,of which the plot is the most abundant,characters are the fullest,and the language is the most vivid to translate.The report explores how to make a reasonable conversion between English and Chinese,so that the version retains the flavor and translates the artistic conception of the original text.Based on the famous American linguist Eugene A.Nida's theory of functional equivalence as a guide,the translator studies the reproduction of the characters from the character's individualized language and seeks the best translation strategies,in order to reproduce the original characters to the greatest extent,to make distinctive features reproduced equivalently in the target language,and then retains the artistic value and reflects the artistic charm of the original text.This report can be divided into five parts.The first part mainly introduces the background information of the writer and her fiction.The second part elaborates the whole translation procedure in three stages,which are before translation,during translation and aftertranslation.The third part is a brief summary of American linguist Eugene A.Nida's theory of functional equivalence and its application to the translation practice.The fourth part is the case analysis,which focuses on the character's individualized language from two aspects of vocabulary and sentence,to explore the corresponding translation strategies and methods,and equivalently reproduce the characters to the greatest extent.The fifth part sums up experiences in translation and cognition on the English-Chinese translation.Through the translation practice,the translator realizes the hardship of translation and learns that translation is an advanced art of language,which not only needs to accurately understand and grasp the original text,but also needs to show its profound cultural connotation as far as possibly based on conveying the basic semantic of the original text.By the translation practice,the translator hopes to provide some references for future literary translation lovers.
