Since 1970 s,with the development of cultural criticism and studies in the western academic circles,“cultural turn” has appeared in the translation study.Under the influence of “cultural turn”,translation researchers no longer obsess with prescriptive instructions, but on a kind of descriptive method.Translation is not seen as text transformations, but a unique political, cultural, and literature behavior in the target language society.Andre Lefevere's Manipulation Theory thinks that translation is a rewriting of an original text, manipulated by three factors, including ideology, poetics and patronage. However, ideology has infiltrated into all aspects of the translation.Among the three factors, the influence of the poetics on translation is obviously closely connected with ideology. As well as,patrons are usually interested in the ideology of literature. Thus it can be seen that ideology has great influence on literary translation, especially, the political ideology and the translator's individual ideology. As a political allegory, the translation and the spread of Animal Farm in China do not go smoothly. The translations of Animal Farm also have a very significant difference in different historical periods.According to Manipulation Theory, this thesis studies and compares three Chinese versions of Animal Farm in different historical periods of China from the perspective of ideology.Specifically speaking, the author will quantitatively analyze translated versions based on political and translators' ideology. Moreover, through the rewriting of “Seven Commandments”,power languages and behavior languages, the author analyzes the influence of the political ideology on the translation texts.Translators' ideology directly affects the internal translation of literary works, including translation style and language and so on.The author makes a thorough analysis on the manipulation of translators' ideology on translation strategies from three aspects of words, sentences and paragraphs. It sees the three versions as an entity to describe their formation process and reasons,to explain the rationality that different versions exist and to find the “invisible hand” which causes the differences between the three translation versions.Researchers not only focus on the translation research factors, such as linguistic level, semantic level and literature itself, but also ideology manipulating text.It is under certain social and historical background rather than in “vacuum” that translation activities are always carried out. Therefore, when people evaluate or appreciate a translation work, should not only evaluate which translation is good, which translation is not good from the perspective of linguistics, but also put the three translation versions into their historical background to understand their formation causes and process, and apply the theory to demonstrate the rationality of different translation versions. In the study of translation, people should not only pay attention to internal text research, but also external text factors.Thereby,it will deepen our understanding for the Polystystem Theory of translation and complexity of translation process.
