| Since Translation Studies achieved"the cultural turn"in the 1990's, western translation scholars have been concerned with impact of ideology on translation from different perspectives. Ideological manipulation on translation from a macroscopic perspective means that translation, as cross-cultural activity, will inevitably be intervened and influenced by culture and politics of the target culture. In a microscopic perspective it can exert influence on the translator's selection of the potential translated work, his translation purpose and strategy, and even his style and diction. This paper arranges to take Guo Moruo's translation of Shelley's poems as a case from the perspective of ideology so as to enlighten the relationship between translation and ideology.This thesis attempts to prove that the practice of translation is manipulated by ideology which involves in the mainstream ideology and the translator's individual ideology through case analysis of Guo Moruo's translation of Shelley's poems and find out social and political factors that affect Guo's translation practice. The thesis is composed of six parts, including introduction and conclusion. The first part is a general introduction of the purpose and significance of the research, research methodology applied and the structure of the thesis. Chapter one is the historical review of the theoretical development of the ideological manipulation in western countries and the related research situation about ideology and translation studies in China, and the introduction of Guo Moruo's translation practice and a review of researches on Guo Moruo and his translation. In chapter two, the author centers on the definition of the terminology"ideology", and concretely analyzes two types of ideology, namely, mainstream ideology and individual ideology and explores the relationship between ideology and translation. In the third chapter, the author dwells on the introduction of the translator and the writer, including the life experiences of Guo Moruo and his translation thought, the life experiences of Shelley and his works. And the author mainly gives a brief introduction of two representative lyric poems in Guo's translation versions of Shelley's lyric poems, from which specific examples are selected to make a detailed analysis of them in the next chapter. In chapter four, the author focuses on analyzing how ideologies influence Guo's selection of Shelley's poems, translation purpose and translation strategies with examples.The conclusion points out that whether before or in the process of translation process, ideology has always played manipulation role implicitly and explicitly. The translator, who lives in different times, will not choose to translate the original text and decide which translation strategies he may employ at will. All kinds of choices the translator makes before and in the process of translation are in accordance with their own purpose, which is either to cater to the mainstream ideology or to realize the individual ideology of the translator. In turn, the translation version can also have a positive function on the mainstream ideology and the individual ideology of the translator by its textual form and diction. Translation research from the ideological perspective is aimed at making translation criticism free of the fantasy of"absolute equivalence"and attaching great importance to the historicity of the translator and the translated texts. And it can make an objective or relatively objective observation and study of the translator and his translation practice, thus grasping more clearly the intrinsic nature of translation and the complexity of translation activities, and opening up a new angle for translation studies and translation criticism in the future. |
