In the Second World War,the United States shifted their attitude from the isolationist policies to the interventionist policy due to the attack on Pearl Harbor.It makes the uniqueness of American films about the Second World War.After the Second World War,the United States paid attention to develop global culture through Hollywood strategy.Hollywood movie is not only film product,but also an important form of culture.Hollywood is a global enterprise,to some extent,due to their great global influence beyond America.Overseas market had become an important source of Hollywood's income after the War.With the growing importance of overseas market,there are more international viewpoints and factors in Hollywood W.W.II which is more attractive compared with movies before the War.From W.W.II to 1950,Hollywood was obligated to maintain the national dignity and expressed American viewpoints to all over the world.Most of the American W.W.II films during this period had happy ending,however the profound thinking on the war was absent.Some W.W.II movies produced between1950 to 2000 are selected to summarize and do some research about characteristics about American W.W.II movies in that period.The outcome is analyzed from different perspectives such as theme,characters,movienational cultural psychology etc.The article has been divided into six chapters.The first chapter is introduction.It introduces the origin of W.W.II films produced in the United States and summarizes the existing research results.In this part,the main research subject of this thesis,movies about American W.W.II from 1950 to 2000,is clarified.Moreover,the thesis research methods have been summarized.The second chapter is the film overview of W.W.II.It briefly demonstrates the development of Hollywood film,especially the development of the film about American W.W.II films.The third chapter emphasizes the study of character image.Seven kinds of character images are summarized: senior generals,civilian officers,prisoners of war,paranoia,women,children and the Jews.Furthermore,the specific films are illustrated to demonstrate the characters.The fourth chapter pays attention to the thesis of these movies.Four types of theme have been categorized according to the content of the movies and typical films have been selected to illustrate each kind of theme.The first section is the time and space: the positive defence of the war.The second section is the body and soul:humanity in the war.The third section is morality and emotion: love in the war.The fourth section is to be or not to be: reflections of the war.The fifth chapter analyzes national cultural psychology in American W.W.II movies.Firstly,the anti-war film during that period expresses the distaste of the war.Secondly,the attention paid onthe war and peace indicates the enduring American traditional isolationism.Just like in the W.W.I,There are many signs in the movies demonstrate that personal goals in the war might damage the interests of the state and the group goal.Therefore,it is promoted that individual goals should cater on the group goals.Additionally,many types of movies had been derived They are variable,referring to different perspectives and domains,in which we can find the inclusive characteristics of American culture.However,there are also some American films have directly exposed the hypocrisy of W.W.II,which includes incompetence or the vain in the war,or individuals are difficult to adapt to normal life after the war.It implied the viewpoint of "the enemy is ourselves" in American culture.The final chapter is conclusion.Film about W.W.II is a bridge between the real history during W.W.II and us.Although this is a peace age,it is necessary for us to remember the history of W.W.II.This is because a viewpoint of history development could help us prepare for war,accept the victory and defeat and accept the result of the war.
