Recently, more and more theories of cognitive linguistics have been applied to the literary research. Since Freeman started the research upsurge of cognitive poetics, the cognitive research on Chinese poetry has also entered an unprecedented stage. Tang Poems and Song Lyrics are the main representatives of the classical Chinese poetry. Their corresponding researches have generally focused on the poetic rhythms, the expressive skills and styles, and the rhetoric techniques. However, since the late 1970's, some foreign cognitive linguists have begun to dedicate themselves to the study on English poetry from the cognitive poetics' perspective. Nowadays, closely following in the footsteps of their foreign colleagues, an increasing number of Chinese scholars engage themselves in applying this prevalent cognitive linguistic theory to their own concerns of the classical Chinese poetry. And with the development of cognitive poetics, the Chinese cognitive poetic scholars have made a lot of contributions to the domestic poetry field and provided a more thorough, crystal methodology for people to better understand or appreciate the classical Chinese poetry. In the long history of the classical Chinese poetry,Li Shangyin was a prominent poet because his poems once rejuvenated the entire poetic realm in the late Tang Dynasty.Li Shangyin enjoyed a very high reputation at his time, and he not only inherited the composing methods and styles of the poets several generations before, but also brought forth some innovations in his poems. It is claimed that he is father of the Obscure Poetry(???)and his poems are characterized by a variety of descriptive techniques, flowery language and imaginative imageries.Since Li Shangyin's poems are full of concerns about his country and people, his poetic style has something similar to those of the great poets, such as Li Bai,Du Fu,and Li He's.And he is master at using various artistic techniques, especially at the quote of classical allusions and the adoption of analogies. At present, the appreciative study of Li Shangyin's poetry has developed into a paradigm among those of the classical Chinese poetry, and meanwhile,it can represent a high literature value itself. The purpose of this thesis is, in the light of Fauconnier's mapping theory, to explore the formational mechanism of artistic conception of Li Shangyin's poems, so that the theoretical research framework of the domestic literature can be enlarged. The adoption of “mapping”, which originated from mathematics, into the research of the classical Chinese poetry will prove the literary value and function of cognitive poetics on the one hand, and will upgrade the whole research system of the classical Chinese poetry on the other. And the integration of the western cognitive theories and the classical Chinese poetry will also play a key role in further broadcasting the traditional culture of our country overseas.According to its contents, the thesis can be divided into the following six chapters. Chapter one is an introduction, which states the research background, the research significance, and the organization of this thesis; Chapter two is a literature review, which presents the research fruits of mapping theory and Li Shangyin's poetry; Chapter three analyzes projection mappings in realization of artistic conception in Li Shangyin's poems, mainly from two aspects of the conventional metaphor and the creative metaphor; Chapter four elaborates pragmatic function mappings in realization of artistic conception in Li Shangyin's poems from two subtypes, i.e. the metonymic mapping and the synecdoche mapping; Chapter five explains schema mappings in realization of artistic conception in Li Shangyin's poems; Chapter six is the conclusion of the whole study.
