Translation Practice Report On "Chaoyang Profile" Column Of Chaoyang Government Website

In recent years, with the further development of economic globalization and the promotion of China's all-dimensional, multi-layered and wide-ranging opening-up policy, the communication and cooperation between China and other countries are in continuous expansion. China has always been involved positively and actively, and has taken various measures to promote itself in the eye of the world. As the most direct and convenient way to learn about Chinese provinces, cities, counties and towns, the construction of Chinese government websites at all levels have received high attention from Chinese governments at all levels. Meanwhile, some governments also release their English website versions one after another in order to take part in the process of globalization as well as facilitate international exchange and cooperation. Therefore, the translation of Chinese government websites is of great significance to the region's opening-up and future development.In this translation practice report, the author takes the column "Chaoyang Profile" from the Government Website of Chaoyang, Liaoning Province as the source text. Firstly, the author introduces the preparation before translation, the difficulties in the translation and the aided references used during the translation. Then, on the basis of translation variation theory developed by Huang Zhonglian, the author chooses some typical examples from the translation to illustrate and explain the adopted translation variation methods. As an informative text, government website translation has some typical features such as large vocabulary and rich information. However, the main target readers of English government websites are foreign enterprises, businessmen and tourists. Their focus and time are limited, so a complete translation of Chinese website information is not reasonable. It will not only consume a lot of time and energy but obscure the important information. Translation variation theory requires that the translator should give full play to their subjective initiative and have a reasonable reconstruction of the original according to the readers'needs. Hence, based on the analysis of the purpose of the source text and the needs of the target readers, the author adopts three translation variation methods (selective translation, editing translation and explanatory translation). After the illustration of abundant examples, the author finds that the adopted translation variation methods are suitable to the translation of government websites. They can not only save the translator's and the reader's time and energy but also meet the needs of specific readers at a large extent in a short time, thus they ensure the effective communication between English websites and English readers, and help the author achieve the translation objective of government websites.
