Against the backdrop of globalization, an increasing number of foreign tourist guests come to China. Owing to the language barrier, the guide interpreter shoulders as the important bridge for language communication and culture communication. Interpreting itself is a difficult job with huge challenge and strict demand. And guide interpreting, characterized by unique language and deep culture, is of more difficulty. It requires that the interpreter should be equipped with large encyclopedic knowledge base, tourist domain knowledge and solid bilingual language competence on the one hand. On the other hand, the interpreter should also have a quick response and certain interpreting skills. But for the guide interpreter, especially for the inexperienced guide interpreter, it is inevitable for him to make mistakes or encounter interpreting failures in the process of interpreting. Previous researches on misinterpreting analyzing combined with translation theories are rare. Therefore, the author targets at misinterpreting based on the author's guide interpreting practice, analyzing the misinterpreting causes and exploring appropriate coping strategies.Based on Relevance Theory, Relevance Translation Theory holds that translation process is a dual ostensive-inferential process. On the one hand, the translator needs to decode the utterance from the speaker. From the information he receives, he needs to infer the correct context. On the other hand, the translator needs to take different cognitive environments of the source language speaker's and the target language receiver's into consideration to seek for optimal relevance and then to recode the utterance in a proper manner according to the target language receiver's cognitive ability. In this way, information from the original speaker can be delivered and communication can be successfully conducted. Guide interpreting is an important form for communication. Only through breaking the culture barrier and the language barrier can the guide interpreter freely and fully deliver information and China's unique culture and charisma to foreign tourists or target recipients. Therefore, the author holds that Relevance Translation Theory can guide C-E guide interpreting.This thesis is divided into six parts. Chapter One gives a brief introduction about this thesis. It includes the background information, the significance and the purpose of this thesis, the research object, previous researches and the general structure of this thesis. Chapter Two focuses on the elaboration of Relevance Theory, and Relevance Translation Theory based on Relevance Theory as well as guide interpreting. Chapter Three introduces classifications of misinterpreting in C-E guide interpreting. Chapter Four analyzes the causes of misinterpreting from the perspective of Relevance Translation Theory. Chapter Five explores C-E guide interpreting coping strategies from the perspective of Relevance Translation Theory. And Chapter Six is the conclusion. It points out the inadequacy of this thesis and its expectation on future studies of this area.
