As a report on guide interpretation, this dissertation describes one guide interpretation task conducted by the author for escorting a foreign teacher and his wife in School of Design, Hunan University to Yuelu Academy and analyzes the interpretation of introducing Hexi Platform, the Main Gate, the Second Gate and the Lecture Hall of Yuelu academy to discuss frequent difficulties of guide interpretation as well as possible coping strategies and solutions. The task process is made up of two parts:"pre-interpreting preparation" and "interpreting", and the report elaborates on what the author did in each part. The author also writes reflectively about the process. In the Chapter of "Case Analysis", this report, closely combining the factor that "Yuelu Academy boasts strong atmosphere of humanity and history", selects several typical cases and makes a minute textual analysis of this guide interpretation task based on interpreting difficulties:taking the interpretation of the couplets on the Main Gate and in the Lecture Hall, the Regulation for Students in the Lecture Hall, the cultural story behind the two characters "longevity" and "blessing" on the Hexi Platform and the ideas of designing the drum-shaped marble block on each side of the Main Gate as an analysis, comparing them with the interpretation for references rendered by the teacher in class and the author's revised interpretation after the completion of the task so as to locate the disadvantages of on-site interpretation, to analyze the reasons behind them and to discuss translation strategies.Through the task description and analysis, it is found out that, firstly, a lesson can be drawn that pre-interpreting preparation should include topic-related knowledge. The interpreter should have an intensive reading of materials including topic-related knowledge so that a guide interpretation of high quality can be completed. Secondly, the author found out that when it comes to guide-interpreting couplets and other literary forms related to history and culture, it is better for the interpreter to look for referential interpretation before interpreting and use them when interpreting. If no interpretation for references can be found, the interpreter is supposed to fully comprehend the source text and to adopt interpreting strategies such as omission, free translation and annotation to make the renderings understandable to the target audience. Thirdly, the interpreter, during the process of the on-site interpretation, should keep a sound mentality and active attitude in face of interpreting difficulties. Only in this way, the negative impact of nervousness and distraction can be removed. Moreover, the interpreter is required to broaden encyclopedic knowledge so as to improve her guide interpretation.
