Being an important branch in translation, literary translation plays an magnificent role in human history. As translation is the communication media of literary works, literary translation is different from other branches of translation. Dancing in fetters (trying to move about while your arms and legs are bound:restricted in movement) vividly expresses the mood we should be in when we translate anything. This paper will mainly discuss the difficulties in literary translation from three aspects:translation of proper names, translation of dialogues and translation of rhetorical device.Coonardoo was written by Australian feminism writer Katharine Susannah Prichard. It is the first Australian novel that portrayed an Aboriginal heroine from childhood to death in a comprehensive and penetrating way. It was also the first work depicted the love tragedy between a white man and a gin.The paper divides into four parts. Chapter one gives an overall introduction to this paper and the source of the project, and also points out translation goal and the structure of the paper. Chapter two introduces the author and the summary of the project. Then it analyses the project from the perspective of linguistic form. Chapter three gives examples and translation strategies respectively on names, aboriginal words, dialogues and rhetorical device. Chapter four summarizes the lessons and experiences in the translation practices and illustrates the remained problems.
