The translation report takes The Beach Boy and A Better Place as the source text from the American writer Ottessa Moshfegh’s collection of short stories Homesick for Another World.The Beach Boy revolves around a middle-aged couple’s trip to an unnamed tropical island.A Better Place is the collection’s best and darkest tale.It tells a story about a boy and a girl wanting to go back to another world by killing the right person.The source text is an expressive text,and the narrative style in the original is distinct and clear.Under the guidance of semantic and communicative translation theory and proper translation strategies,the report aims to make the original text and the translated text equivalent in the content of this novel,such as characters,plot and the theme.This report includes four major parts.The first part comprehensively describes this practice from two aspects: 1.task background 2.nature of the task.The second part is the description of the translation process which focuses on the preparation before translation,translation process and post-translation.The third part is case analysis.Case analysis is made on the problems concerning with the translation of title,translation of dialogue,translation of dash,translation of rhetorical device,and translation of style.The fourth part is the conclusion.Through the translation practice,the translator has enhanced the understanding of semantic and communicative translation theory and realized the importance of the literary attainments.On the comprehensive understanding of the source text,the translator can choose appropriate translation methods to convey the content and purport.
