Rhetoric Translation Under The Guidance Of Rhetorical Cognition ——A Case Study Of E-C Translation Of The Literary Sense(Excerpt)

Generalised Theory defines the human being not only as the symbol-using animal but as the rhetoric-using animal,suggesting that human thoughts and actions are inevitably impacted by rhetoric.As the core concept of Generalised Theory,Rhetorical Cognition is put forward against Conceptual Cognition.In the literary work,Rhetorical Cognition showcases the extraordinary usage of language,conforming to poetic logic rather than rational logic,thus highlighting the aesthetic values of the literary language.Therefore,the translator should maintain or re-create the Rhetorical Cognition of the source text at the utmost possibility for the purpose of the aesthetic experience of the target language reader.To address this issue,this paper explores specific translation methods under each of the three conversion modes of Rhetorical Cognition by Feng Quangong that serves as the theoretical framework,taking as an example four pieces in The Literary Sense,a short story collection by E.Nesbit.Moreover,the paper analyses the potential language aesthetic values and the reader’s receptive response under aesthetics and acceptability.First,from Rhetorical Cognition to Rhetorical Cognition,the major methods are literal translation,additional translation,and omission.Second,from Rhetorical Cognition to Conceptual Cognition,primary approaches are free translation and interpretative translation.And from Conceptual Cognition to Rhetorical Cognition,free translation and additional translation are mainly employed.The originality of this research is as follows.First,despite the scarcity of literature,Rhetorical Cognition processes good promise in many interdisciplinary or sub-field studies such as translational rhetoric,literary translation,and cognitive poetics.Second,the conversion modes of Rhetorical Cognition are novel enough for further analysis.Third,the case study chapter includes more than the translation of figures of speech（metaphor,personification,transferred epithet,oxymoron,etc.）,but the metaphor analysis in the textual level and the poetic layer such as conceptual metaphor,consistent with the trends of metaphor studies.Last,the mode from Conceptual Cognition to Rhetorical Cognition breaks the traditional shackles of loyalty by offering a new translation idea.
