Objective: The activity of sulfotransferase and the expression of sulfotransferase messenger ribonucleic acid(m RNA)were predicted to predict the curative effect of androgenic alopecia(AGA).Methods:(1)135 patients with androgenetic alopecia were selected for drawing off the anagen hair and the activity of sulfotransferase was measured(A value of absorbance).2% of minoxidil was given in the alopecia for 6 months.Global photography assessment was conducted at initial diagnosis and sixth months of treatment. The effect was judged according to the changes of the area and degree of hair loss before and after the treatment, and the results were grouped according to the effect.(2)10 patients in the AGA operation group were extracted the hair of the growth period, and the hair follicles were taken with the ring drilling method.47 patients in the AGA medication group only took the anagen hair. The m RNA expression of the sulfotransferase was detected by real-time fluorescence quantitative polymerase chain reaction(q PCR)(expressed by B value). The treatment method and curative effect of the patients in the medication group were the same as above.Results:(1)Studies on the level of tissue: The difference of the activity of sulfotransferase was statistically significant(P=0.000,P=0.000,P=0.036)between the improvement group, the control group and the ineffective group. There was no significant difference in the activity of sulfotransferase in the improved group(P=0.368).The activity of sulfotransferase was positively correlated with the change of the curative effect integral(r=0.609,n=135,P=0.000).The best threshold prediction effect of 2% minoxidil sulfotransferase activity was 0.430,the sensitivity was 83%,and the specificity was 95%.(2)Studies on the level of molecular biology: The expression of sulfotransferase m RNA in hair follicles and hair was positively correlated(r=0.703,n=10,P=0.023).The difference of m RNA expression of sulfotransferase in different sex was statistically significant(P=0.007).Family history had no significant effect on the expression of sulfotransferase m RNA(P=0.057).The m RNA expression of sulfotransferase was positively correlated with the severity of hair loss at the time of treatment(r=0.320,n=47,P=0.028).There was no correlation between the m RNA expression of sulfotransferase, the curative effect score and the activity of sulfotransferase(r=0.038,n=29,P=0.846;r=-1.515,n=47,P=0.311).Conclusion:(1)Effect of 2% minoxidil in the treatment of AGA can be predicted by the enzyme activity of sulfotransferase. When the threshold was set to 0.430,the sensitivity was 83%,and the specificity was 95%.(2)The noninvasive method of pulling hair can replace the traditional invasive hole drilling method to detect the expression of sulfotransferase m RNA.(3)Sulfotransferase m RNA may have posttranscriptional level, translation level and post-translational level modification, thus affecting the activity of sulfotransferase.
