Objectives:To investigate the prevalence of malocclusion and orthodontic proportion of12-14-year-old adolescents in Jiangxi Province by epidemiological surveys. We can analyze and compare the characteristics of malocclusion in Jiangxi.By exploring the relationship between malocclusion and dental caries, and finding the risk factors of orthodontic, this study aims to provide a baseline data for oral prevention and orthodontic, and provide a scientific guidance and basis for our government when making oral hygiene policy and plan. Methods:A stratified random cluster sampling method was used.5387 12-14 years old adolescents were examined by 3 professional dentists.Subjects were recruited from30 survey sites in 10 cities.Standard investigation form was made based on the individual normal occlusion and Angle's classification of malocclusion. Finally,we collected the survey form, established a database into Epidata3.0,and made a statistical analysis by SPSS19.0.Results:1.The prevalence of malocclusion in adolescents aged 12-14 years in Jiangxi Province was 79.67%.The composition ratios of Class I,II,and III malocclusion were 39.08%,36.78%,and 24.14%,respectively.The highest proportion was Class I.2.The most common clinical manifestation of malocclusion was dentition crowding, with a prevalence of 91.3%,followed by deep overbite, deep overjet, dentition spacing, anterior crossbite, and anterior open bite, with a prevalence of60.00%,51.02%,21.31%,0.59%,and 0.59%.The prevalence of crowding in girls was higher than boys(P<0.05);The prevalence of deep overbite, deep overjet, and dentition spacing were higher in boys than in girls(P<0.05);There was no genderdifference in the prevalence of anterior crossbite, and anterior open bite(P>0.05).3.The prevalence of malocclusion in boys and girls was 81.16% and 78.21%respectively,and boys were higher than girls(P<0.05).The prevalence of Nanchang,Yichun,Jiujiang,Shangrao, and Ganzhou were different(P<0.05).The prevalence of malocclusion in Nanchang was the highest, and the lowest in Ganzhou. There was no statistically significant difference between urban and rural and different age groups(P>0.05).4.Adolescents with caries experience were more likely to have malocclusion compared with their counterparts without caries experience.Their prevalence were82.28% and 78.71% respectively.5.Some students thought that oral problems affected "smile" and "easy to upset".Students with the malocclusion were different from the normal(P<0.05).The student with malocclusion thinks that his oral condition affected smile and was more easily upset.6.The orthodontic rate of malocclusion was 2.63%.The four factors, gender, urban and rural, mother's degree and ‘influence smile' had an effect on the rate of orthodontic(P<0.05).The orthodontic rate of girls was higher than that of boys. The rate of orthodontic in urban was higher than that in rural.Mothers with a high degree had a higher rate of orthodontics. The adolescents who thought that malocclusion had an effect on smiles had a high orthodontic rate. Conclusion:There was a high prevalence rate and low orthodontic rate in Jiangxi Province with malocclusion of adolescents. Our findings reveal that has become a serious and urgent problem. It is necessary to strengthen the combination of prevention and treatment. We should actively carry out oral health education, popularize the knowledge of malocclusion, and actively treat caries. It is of great significance for the physical and mental health of adolescents to early treatment for malocclusion that have appeared.
