Background and ObjcctivcIn recent decades, with the improvement of living standards and denta1 awareness inpeople, and with the improvement of the techniques in orthodootic therapy more and morepeople with morphologic malocclusion have come to hospital for otthodontic treatment.Meanwhile, many studies have been focused on the relationship between orthodontic therapyand Temporomandibular disorders (TMD). Differences in methods taken in various studies, examination methods and diagnostic criteria in TMD, and differences in the composition ofthe materials have contributed to the differences in the results. The purpose of this study was: to set up the survey tables of orthodontic group, malocclusion group and normal group and their corresponding databases; to explore the relationship between orthodontic treatment and TMD; to explore the relationship between functional malocclusion and TMD; to explore the relationship between morphologic malocclusion and TMD. Materials and MethodsThe survey tables of the orthodontic group, malocclusion group and normal group were designed, and their corresponding databases were set up with Visual Foxpro 6.0. The orthodontic group, 173 cases come from the 118 Army Hospital, received orthodontic fixed edgewise appliance treatment. Malocclusion group was enclosed 95 cases who were with morphologic malocclusion. Normal group were 32 cases with normal occlusion. The both groups, normal group and malocclusion group, were the students from three middle schools and young policemen in Wenzhou City. According to the methods of Helkimo, the questionnaire and clinical examination were administered in three groups to collect symptoms and signs of TMD, and datas were analyzed in the databases. ResultsThere were statistically significant differences between the orthodontic group and malocclusion group in the distribution of anamnestic, clinical dysfunction and occlusion indices. There were statistically significant differences between the orthodontic group and normal group with regard to the distribution of anamnestic.clinical dysfunction index, No statistically significant differences were found between the malocclusion group and normal group in terms of anamnestic, clinical dysfunction and occlusion indices. There were statistically significant differences between the orthodontic group and malocclusion group in the distribution of functional malocclusion. ConclusionThis database plays a practical role in the research of TMD. The results suggest that people received orthodontic treatment have more symptoms and signs of TMD in the time ranged, and it can be concluded that there is a relationship between functional malocclusion after orthodontic treatment and TMD. The results also indicate that little relationship can be found between mophologic malocclusion and TMD in the most of young people.
