Background: Eczema is a very common problem worldwide and frequently encountered in the dermatological consultation.However,studies of the prevalence of eczema in general populations are lacking.Objective: To determine the frequency of eczema and discuss the clinical characteristics of eczema in hospitalized patients in our hospital.Methods: The clinical data of 224 hospitalized patients of eczema were collected over a period of 3 years.General information of patients and clinical characteristics of disease were analyzed respectively.Results: The frequency of these eczemas was 62 per 1000 patients.Mean age of patients was 59.66 ±18.69 years old.Male to female ratio was 2:1.The average age at the onset of patients was 55.95 ± 18.39 years old.The duration of hospitalization was from 2 days to 22 days.The average duration of hospitalization was 8.87 ± 3.56 days.The most stage of eczema was chronic(87.06%),followed by acute(10.71%),and subacute(2.23%).Most of eczema was bilateral(97.77%).Most frequent locations were legs or feet(82.14%),followed by arms or hands(74.11%);chest,abdomen,or back(58.48%);head,face,or scalp(46.42%);groin or underarms(7.14%);skin folds of arms and legs(4.02%);and elbow or knees(3.12%).Most common comorbid condition of eczema was hypertension(34.37%),followed by diabetes mellitus type-2(16.52%),and atherosclerotic heart disease(5.36%).Other comorbid conditions noted were hyperplasia prostate,pregnancy,gastrointestinal disorder,tinea pedis,chronic pulmonary disease,liver disease,renal failure,hyperlipidaemia,cardiac arrhythmia,and prurigo nodularis.Conclusion: It was found in this study that most of the eczematous hospitalized patients were older people,which affects more in males.The dominating stage was chronic eczema with common site of involvement was legs or feet.Hypertension was the most common comorbid conditions of eczema in hospitalized patients.
