Backgrounds With the aging population, the incidence and prevalence of elderly patients with epilepsy continues to rising. It has become the most common nervous system disease after stroke and dementia, significantly impacts the quality of life of older people and increases the health care resource burden on society.Population-based clinical research about senile epilepsy is still rare in our country. Objective To investigate the etiology, clinical characteristics, auxiliary inspections, treatment and prognosis of senile epileptics. Methods Retrieving data of patients admitted to the First Clinical College of Chongqing Medical University from July 2011 to February 2017 from the First Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University medical record room,by using "epilepsy" and / or "seizure" as the searching term. Then screening patients older than 60 years of age,and analyzing medical records of these patients, including basic information(name, gender, age, department),etiology, clinical manifestation, auxiliary examination(electroencephalogram, computed tomography or nuclear magnetic resonance, biochemical tests)and treatment.Analyzing drug efficacy and side effects for long-term inpatients by carefully reading the medical records, following up the remaining patients by telephone. Results 96 cases(79.34%)had definite causes. The common causes including cerebrovascular disease(59.38%),intracranial tumors(13.54%),central nervous system infection(8.33%),craniocerebral trauma(5.20%),acute metabolic or toxic factors(11.46%).71 cases suffered from partial seizure(58.68%),of which 54 cases is complex partial seizures(44.63%);15 cases suffered from generalized tonic-clonic seizures(12.40%),14 cases suffered from tonic seizures(11.57%),17 cases from status epilepticus(14.05%),4 cases from atypical seizures(3.31%).Sodium valproate and levetiracetam is the most commonly used drugs.82 cases were controlled effective with drug treatment(97.62%).88.10% of cases were controlled effective only with single drug treatment. Conclusion Epilepsy in elderly people often has underlying etiologies. The most common causes is cerebrovascular diseases.Intracranial tumors, central nervous system infection and trauma are common causes.Acute metabolic or toxic factors cannot be ignored.Partial seizure is the most common type of attacks, especially the complex partial seizure.Only monotherapy can reduce seizures for most elderly patients, just a small number of patients need two or more drugs.
