Objective: To evaluate the efficiency and safety of same-session flexible ureteroscopy lithotripsy(FURL)for the treatment of bilateral upper ureteral and/or renal stones.Materials and Methods: Between September 2014 and November 2016,simultaneous bilateral FURS combined with a holmium laser were performed for 43 patients with bilateral upper ureteral and/or renal stones. The mean age of the 43 patients was 48±12(range 24~72)years.All patients underwent CT scanning preoperatively and X-Ray of the kidneys-ureter-bladder(KUB)4-6 weeks post-operatively.The stone burden, stone free rate(SFR),operative times, hospitalized period and complications were quantified and evaluated. Results: The mean total stone burden of each procedure was 35.1±17.1 mm,mean operation time 101.5±37.2(range 25~180)min and hospitalized period 4 days. The overall stone-free rate(SFR)was 81.4% after all procedures. The SFR was 100% in patients with the stone burden less than 30 mm and 63.2% in patients with the stone burden greater than or equal to 30mm(P = 0.001).A patient developed postoperative fever and another appeared subcapsular renal hematoma. Conclusion: Bilateral same-session FURL is a safe and effective procedure in patients with bilateral ureteral and/or renal calculi. The SFR is satisfactory, especially in patients with the total stone burden less than 30 mm.
